DESCRIPTION

The Predator UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) has provided the U.S. Military units intelligence agencies with a versatile airborne system for more than a decade. It provides "real time" aerial reconnaissance, target assessment as well as interdiction capabilities. Operated by a pilot or systems operator seated in a land-based control module as a remote site, control can achieve "line-of-site" using "C" band data link or over long distances the "K" band satellite data link is used.

The predator is designed as a medium altitude aircraft operates between 10,000 and 20,000 feet. It is powered by a Rotax 4-cylinder engine, driving a pusher propeller. It measures 27 feet in length with a wingspan of 58 feet by 8 inches. A color camera is fitted in the nose to provide operator vision. Recon systems include a daylight TV camera, infrared low-light camera, and synthetic aperture radar system. Initially developed as a stable recon platform, two external pylons fitted with "Hellfire" air-to-ground missiles may be carried to neutralize high-threat targets.

Predators are currently operated by the 432nd Expenditionary Wing with three operational squadrons; the 11th, 15th and 17th Reconnaissance Squadrons. They are operated by the 1st Special Operations Wing and the Texas Air National Guard. In may of 2006 the FAA issued a certification of authorization for flight over the U.S. and recon Predators now serve with the U.S. border patrol.
